Since Saturday, 1 November, legislation has changed for home nurses. For a whole range of treatments, they must no longer have medical prescription so that their patient can be reimbursed.
As our Director of Nursing, Edgard Peters, explains, «The changes bring real recognition of the work and autonomy of home nurses.». In fact, for the same care, a nurse in a hospital or nursing home did not need a prescription. So ultimately, this is a alignment within the profession itself, but which carries enormous meaning and recognition for our home-based profession.
«Let's take the example of a patient who has had a tracheotomy and needs their airways suctioned when necessary. Previously, a home care nurse had to have a prescription from the attending physician to perform the procedure. From Sunday onwards, if the nurse visits their patient and the patient requires suctioning, they will be able to act directly and effectively to relieve the patient.» explains Edgard.
But let us be clear, this is in no way a measure that creates a rift between doctors and nurses. «Quite the contrary» assures us our director. «Collaboration between nurses and doctors is and remains key to ensuring optimal patient care.» he concludes.
The various players in the medical and home care sectors form a team that works together to support each patient in the most effective and caring way possible. These new measures are a further step forward in working together to build well-being at home.
